Roo Watch ’11…The Artists: Clare Maguire

The Woman: At the age of 17, Maguire began traveling from her Birmingham, England home to the big city, London, to play small gigs and network with music industry big wigs, and small wigs, and all wigs really.

Six years later, at the age of 23, Maguire is one of the most listened to underground artists on Myspace (namely her demo “Strangest Thing”), has been wined and dined by Jay-Z at the man’s restaurant in New York to discuss the business aspect of music with he and Rick Rubin, and signed a major-label deal with Polydor Records.

The Music: Maguire is on the brink of releasing her debut album Light After Dark, due out February 28th.  The lead single, due out a week before the album drops, named “Last Dance,” has leaked and features Maguire’s lush vocals, comparable to the pipe-work of Stevie Nicks, but a bit edgier as her Irish blood seeps through, sung over a synth infested Eelectro-Pop beat.

In my humble opinion, between the aforementioned “Strangest Thing” and Maguire’s lead single, the former is the superior number showcasing her pure and powerful, rolling thunder vocals, unaltered by production and engineering, as well piano play that it more pleasant on the ear than photon laser sound effects.  “Strangest Thing” is raw and beautiful.
