Tara Elliott & The Red Velvets Pay Tribute To The Runaways

On June 28th Main Man Records, founded by local musician and producer Keith Roth, of Frankenstein 3000, will release Take It Or Leave It: A Tribute To The Queens Of Noise…also known as a 36-track, two-disc compilation paying homage to the influential, female filled group of Hard-Rock goddesses, The Runaways.

Aside from such well known contributors as The Donnas, Shonen Knife, The Dandy Warhols, David Johansen, Peaches, and King Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys, the collection features tracks from a multitude of Garden State favorites including a pair of songs by Frankenstein 3000 (“California Paradise” and “American Nights,” the latter with assistance from Runaways vocalist Cherie Currie), The Ribeye Brothers (“Trash Can Murders”), and Richard Barone, formerly of The Bongos (“Hollywood”), as well as the Asbury amp crashers Tara Elliott & The Red Velvets, who covered the first song ever written by Joan Jett, founder of The Runaways, “You Drive Me Wild.”

“We had lots of songs choose from,” explained Elliott, “and although these women went on to have lengthy solo careers, I figured this was really about the beginning of it all.  And since Joan Jett started the band, I chose the very first song she ever wrote.”

“It just made sense to choose ‘You Drive Me Wild,'” Elliott continued.  “It’s old, it has a great feel and I thought it’d be fun to take something that aged, keep it dirty, wild, and raw, and put our modern spin on it.”

The Red Velvet front-woman went on to describe how The Runaways affected her musical outlook.

“When I first found out about The Runaways I was floored.  They were so bad ass and in your face, and didn’t give a damn about acting a certain way or how they expressed their sexuality…the band owned the stage, and I was won over immediately.”

“The way these women expressed themselves,” said Elliott, “they were sexy in all aspects, which was unheard of, women just didn’t write songs like that, let alone act out in that manner…Looking back I never realized all the obstacles the The Runaways had to deal with.  This band pushed a lot of boundaries, the same ones many female musicians face today.  Rock N’ Roll was considered off limits for women back then and some still view this genre as one that’s closed, but Rock music is for everyone and The Runaways helped set that standard.”

According to Elliott there will be pair of record release shows, one for each coast, in New York City and Los Angeles.

“The lineups are going to be even better than the compilation lets on.  Keith [Roth] is a very smart guy that knows how to put acts together.  And the way Main Man [Records] does these release shows, they’re almost like miniature festivals, sometimes as many as 20 bands can share the stage.”

No dates for these shows have been announced but in the mean time be sure to check out Tara Elliott & The Red Velvets on the 27th at Trinity & The Pope presented by Kitcshens Live.

HUGE NOTE:  One of the contributors to this album, Sandy West, drummer of the band Blue Fox and founding member of The Runaways, lost her battle with cancer in 2006 and to honor her, Main Man Records will be donating a portion of the proceeds from this record to the American Cancer Society…Take It Or Leave It: A Tribute To The Queens Of Noise can be purchased here.
