Bonnaroo Day 2: My Morning Jacket Surfs A Sea Of Humanity

During the Louisville-based Rock outfit’s sixth Bonnaroo performance (which I believe places the band behind only Bela Fleck, who made his seventh trip to Roo this Summer) My Morning Jacket front-man, and at one time a poorly drawn cartoon character on American Dad, Jim James, was star struck…by himself.

Seemingly unable to comprehend how My Morning Jacket got to this point, James, sporting a pair of fuzzy white boots, was moved to words as he stared out from the What Stage upon thousands of bodies, suddenly transformed into a fluid sea of grace as darkness caressed and cooled the sweaty mass.

“I can’t tell you what a magical honor it is to be here with you tonight, this is soooooo surreal,” expressed James.  “We’ve been to Bonnaroo quite a few times now and this is our first time out here on the main stage, and it’s unbelievable to see the ocean, the ocean of humanity.”

“We’ve watched so many great shows from up there [the rafters on each side of the stage] and out there [in the audience] and all over the place,” he continued.  “We’ve had our minds blown so many times at this festival and it’s such an honor to be here with you tonight.”

And so we were, a living, breathing, body of water, churning in unison with every upstroke of James’ guitar on “Off The Record,” waves building to a crest and crashing down joyously as the vocalist wailed “I’m amazed!” on the track of the same name.

Amazing…that is probably the best word to describe this one.
