Back in May, a video, shot by your’s truly, surfaced of The Gay Blades charismatic front-man, James Dean Wells (a.k.a. Clark Westfield), serenading an Asbury Park audience with a new tune named “Just Kids” at the Rick Barry curated A Night In Progress.
At the time, it wasn’t known what type of plans the soulful songsmith had for his new work, if any, but yesterday afternoon he, and his longtime partner and stick wielder Quinn English (a.k.a. Puppy Mills), cleared the air by dropping a newly recorded version of the song co-starring English on the throne, a refreshing aspect to a track I’ve only seen Wells perform during his recent string of solo sets.

The band declared “Just Kids” the first number released from a forthcoming EP, the eventual follow up to Savages, The Gay Blades 2010 sophomore full-length released that landed in SIMGE’s Top 5 Albums Of The Year.
According to The Gay Blades official announcement, the EP was recorded by Peter Wade of Wondersound Studios (MNDR, Psychobuildings, Melanie Fiona, among others), in New York City.
“Given the tragedy of us losing our friend Nicholas Albrecht,” continued the statement, “and now Amy Winehouse, ‘Just Kids’ seemed like an appropriate track to release first.”
No release date or other information about the record has been provided, but stay tuned for more details.
The Gay Blades will be performing a string of area shows this week including Saturday night’s performance at Asbury Lanes where the band will release its debut record, Ghosts, on vinyl, and the following day at Dirtstock (A benefit for the aforementioned Nicholas Albrecht) in Woodbine, NJ…for more details on the latter follow the link.
