On the brink of the 19th Annual Asbury Music Awards, presented by The Saint, hosted by The Stone Pony, our community is speaking out in support of one its own, a promotional and artistic staple in this musical hub by the sea for more than two decades, the man we call Jacko…will our voices be heard?
Jacko, as the single monickered local personality is known, has played in more than 20 Avante Garde acts, including Milky Chicken Spit, which is up for Top outfit in that genre at the awards gala on the 13th, offered an intriguing, if not completely captivating, brand of spoken word art, sometimes screamed over trippy bass laden Metal tunes, and booked nights of multi-media artistic expression at various area venues, most notably The Brighton Bar, for more than 20 years.
Jacko is an original and recently has had his thumb, an extremity that’s been on the pulse of exposition and creation in this community for a long time, slightly lifted from lifeline, but his impression has been left, and the outcry of support from artisans and patrons alike acts as evidence.
Local musicians like J.T. Makovicecki (Thomas Wesley Stern) and Anthony Defabritus (Accidental Seabirds), and Dave Colon (Mad Feather Group) among others, have all come forth in favor of Jacko and the Lifetime Achievement Award they’d like to see him presented with this Sunday.
One reader, that calls herself Amanda M, summed it up rather perfectly:
“I vote for Jacko for a Lifetime Achievement Award, Poet Laureate, and Top Promoter. He has been a friend to me over the years and I consider him family. His devotion to the local music and poetry scene is nothing short of legendary. He’s mentored and inspired and befriended most of the nominees on this ballot.”
