SIMGE’s End Of Year Lists…Artists Pick Em: Don Ryan

Don Ryan’s debut full-length, Tangle Town, barely missed the cut on SIMGE’s Top 27 Albums Of 2011 list, and alluring collection of electrified Folk-Rock that still gets regular play in my Itunes library.  Grab the album, which the artist has so graciously made available for free-99, here. The Talented penman from Northern New Jersey and/or New York City was gracious enough to bestow upon us his five favorite releases of 2011…enjoy, and catch him live in Brooklyn on Saturday evening at Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave).

5. Lulu by Lulu

I know what you’re thinking — “That Lulu album is a piece of shit! Why would you put it on your favorites list?” Well, it’s on here BECAUSE it’s a piece of shit. This flaming bag of monkey turd is the most perfect comedy album since Eddie Murphy’s “Raw”. Metallica and Lou Reed? Metallica? And Lou Fucking Reed? Look, I love salmon. And I love ice cream. But I’m pretty sure salmon-flavored ice cream tastes like shit.

4. Whirling Dervish EP by Elephant Goes West

OK, this one is a little different, in that these guys are the only ones on the list that I know personally. They’re good friends of mine and I’ve written music with vocalist/guitarist Eric Burchfield for years. I may be a bit biased, but I doubt it. They’re good…really good! Check them out and see.

3. All of his 2011 releases by Jack Conte

This is not exactly an album in the traditional sense. It IS, however, a collection of songs…so it could be made into an album if you’d like. Jack Conte releases music videos on youtube, painstakingly showing you each track as it’s made in the studio. He is fucking brilliant!

2. Bad As Me by Tom Waits

From the first listen through, I could tell this was my new favorite Tom Waits record. He varies his vocal delivery on this more than he has in years, lyrically he’s never been better, and not one song overstays its welcome. This is one of those records that was built to last.

1.Tamer Animals by Other Lives

The song “Weather” from this album is literally the best song I’ve heard this year. This band is dark, atmospheric, and at times a bit strange. Some of their songs are among the most beautiful I’ve ever heard.
