LOD: Worst Asbury Park Debut…Manitoba

Night 2 – Asbury Lanes: The buzz built up around Manitoba, a Punk-Rock supergroup featuring members of legendary Punk outfits The Dictators and Manitoba’s Wild Kingdom, leading up to its debut show on Friday evening at Asbury Lanes was great, and so was its performance, for one song at least, winning much of the audience over with a jarring rendition of “The Party Starts Now,” and front-man Dick Manitoba’s post salvo comments where he claimed “This is what I’ve been missing in my life.  Playing live.  Sure, I have radio show, but during breaks you’re always wondering if anyone is listening to you.  But your reaction here let’s me know you love it.”  It was all down hill from here. As the night marched forward, Handsome Dick proceeded to transform into that aforementioned radio personality rather than his beloved Punk persona bred during the ’70s in the dingy New York City underground music scene, meandering on elongated post song tangents, alienating many of the younger onlookers by bashing their messiah, Facebook, their sense of style – “I walk through the East Village and I see all these kids dressed up in their ‘parents clothing,’ and I say what the hell happened?  I used to dress down to come here.” – and their love of Hookah Bars.  “This kids came up to me the other day and said ‘Hey man, do you know where the closest Hookah Bar is?’  I said ‘No.  I don’t know, and I don’t care about that.”  Aside from the disparagements, the performance seemed like one, the act appeared as such, it all felt fake, which is the perfect equation to cause music enthusiasts to…Not Care About You.
