“Don’t Put My Whiskey Away” is a song with multiple faces, with depth, a symbol of sorts, shedding a light on what’s to come while wetting the musical palette of those who consume it.  Though it fronts         Thomas Wesley Stern’s forthcoming debut full-length, American Pain,  which is set to drop on March 9th at The Press Room, the release marks a turning point in the outfit’s young existence, an evolutionary development and maturation of the group’s songwriting abilities, and a graduation from its former title of of “four-man string band,” to full-blown Folk-Rock juggernaut.

The inclusion of drum-work, squeals from a lightly plucked electric six-string, and the melodious moan of a woodwind on this waltz through a rugged whiskey-soaked soundscape of pistol-toting outlaws and outlanders makes for a much fuller sound than what was experienced on the group’s 2011 debut EP, Hope Folk.

What Thomas Wesley Stern could achieve, how explorative the group could be, seemed limited on that lauded inaugural collection of acoustic guitar-led Campfire-Pop when compared to this composition, but it appears working alongside Anthony Defabitus (Accidental Seabirds) at his Freehold, NJ base of operations, AntFarm Studio, may have had a major influence on the sound American Pain will possess, and I can’t wait to hear the rest.

Again, American Pain will drop on Friday, March 9th at The Press Room in Asbury Park (610 Bangs Avenue) featuring support by the aforementioned Accidental Seabirds, and local songstress Lindsey DeSena’s first ever live performance.  Doors open at 8:30 p.m. with a $5 cover that goes directly to the artists, a Press Room policy I agree with tremendously…don’t miss it.
